NanoSonic’s STEM Teacher, Margy Journell, Selected As PAEMST Virginia State Finalist
Ms. Margy Journell, a 5th Grade Mathematics teacher at the Eastern Elementary/Middle School in Giles County, Virginia, has been selected as a Virginia state-level finalist for this year’s Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).
Margy is one of four Giles County Elementary and Middle, and High School teachers working with NanoSonic and Leidos Inc. engineers on a program supported by the U.S. Department of Transportation to develop science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) lesson plans related to transportation engineering issues. Developed lesson plans would potentially be used in after-school STEM programs in Giles County schools and transitioned to use as part of in-class science and math instruction.
The PAEMST Awards are the nation’s highest honors for teachers of mathematics and science. The award recognizes those teachers who develop and implement a high-quality instructional program that is informed by content knowledge and enhances student learning. Since the program’s inception, more than 4,300 teachers have been recognized for their contributions in the classroom and to their profession. The National Science Foundation administers PAEMST on behalf of The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
