| As an atheist, I can see good in religion. It's not the good I choose for myself, but I can certainly understand.Atheists love to use giant historical miscarriages to illustrate how religion can go terribly wrong, but we also tend to gloss over the indignities committed daily by people who have abandoned secular values as well.I see religion as a sort of absorbable suture, something that people can choose to use when they feel like they have nothing else. What good has come of it? I do agree that the good tends to get drowned out by TV preachers, holy wars, and jihads, but I don't think it's fair to ignore that it helps people in tiny, very personal ways. Belief in God has comforted parents after the death of a child, has kept people from killing people when they damn well felt like (or even deserved it), and gave people a community to join or someone to pray to if they were otherwise alone.Could all those things be replaced with secular values? Sure. Do secular values provide that sense of comfort for everyone? No, or more accurately, not yet.And yes, I believe their faith is false. But can my fellow atheists honestly look in the mirror and say that they, even after having purged God, don't still indulge in a few untestable faiths? Whether it be your own attractiveness to others, your intelligence, your potential for success in life, or any other small faiths you may have that might be in direct conflict with empirical fact.It is a very few who can honestly claim that they have completely purged the need to tell small lies to themselves to get through the the day in one emotional piece. That there is someone more powerful than they are who is watching them and helping them is one of the lies that other people choose. So, if you feel the need to laundry-list three hundred abuses to follow this up, then so be it. I'm just suggesting that the atheist movement I'm a part of might benefit from a bit less condemning and a bit more understanding, and a bit less crusading and a bit more evangelizing. |

The Digg Moderators must really love this stuff...or Digg.com is paid to promote certain topics and links.Hey! It is a business after all.
I just pretend that they named it after Bruce Willis. It makes me feel a little better inside.

“A man approaches his wife with a sheep under his arm and says "This is the pig I ***** when you're not around." The wife, annoyed, says "I'm pretty sure that's a sheep." The man replies, "No, I was talking to the sheep."

Lobbying should be illegal in my opinion, Its basically bribing the public officials legally..
Well, it increases the resolution, just not the quality.!

There is a need for the FCC but they need to really focus on what is more important.

I just wish they would fix up the whole Xbox Originals situation first. Instead of completely fixing ALL of the old Xbox titles to play on the 360, they only support some of the popular titles. I got a stack of originals I'm taking to E.B. Games to trade in, because Microsoft still doesn't support them. And how many years later? And how about opening up an API development system, where I could get my widget back (weather), Revision3 and other vidcasts, etc? I seriously miss my hacked, original Xbox.

It will take a while to trickle though the rest of the nation but down in South Florida where it all started, inventory is already down and prices have been on the up and up most of the year. Give it a bit. |
