That's not exactly true (about jet engines). The blades in a jet engine aren't for propulsion, they just feed air into the combustion chamber. The combustion is what gives thrust.Turbofans (most jets) do have large propellers in the front that are driven by the jet engine and provide thrust though, so if those are what you are referring too, you are partially correct. The tube is essential though; without it, you wouldn't have a prop plane with lots of blades, you would have a jet engine that doesn't work.
